Growing up, I spent summers on the coast of Maine with my family. At the end of summer we would gather for a meal at Arrows. This is their garden, just behind the restaurant. All of the produce used in the restaurant is grown here.
Inspiration for an Urban Kitchen Garden.
Tucked snugly around a terra cotta garden cloche in raised beds: lettuces, chives, rhubarb, and borage occupy a fairly small space. More ideas for the modern urban kitchen gardener include the use of creeping thyme as a ground cover and growing herbs and other vegetables in pots vertically, by arranging them on a vintage step ladder. The cold frame is built into the eaves of an A-frame structure. Take a look at your own outdoor space, and figure out which areas can be transformed into a more serviceable garden.

Now you can manage your garden plot online! The smartgardener will 1) help you lay out a garden based upon how much space you have, 2) allow you to select plants (suitable to geographic area and season), 3) give you a custom garden plan based upon the information you provide, and 4) send you a weekly to do and reminder list. If you want to add your own notes or photos - you can do that too. Seeds can be ordered at the site from suppliers, so you don’t have to go hunting for seeds online. Community gardens can also set up a garden online, so I assume schools can do so also.

Great idea for a simple greenhouse garden, using an old clear plastic umbrella. Keeps the birds out of your garden until plants are strong and sturdy.

The Daily Mail pays a visit to Todmorden, a quaint British town that’s littered with raised vegetable and herb gardens where residents can grow — and take — whatever they fancy.The ethnically and economically diverse mill town of about 15,000 residents is home to Incredible Edible, an ambitious, agrarian-minded scheme that’s brought together an entire community under one common goal: to become completely self-sufficient in food by the year 2018.
